I am a military insignia collector and even more so a Vietnam
Special Forces insignia collector. The book lived up to my wildest
expectations. It was very special to put names and faces with these
true heroes. I have read and studied everything I can get my hands on
and this book was perfect because It was the real patches and facts with
the real people who wore them and lived and sometimes died for our
freedoms. I believe there should be many more Medal of Honor winners
from these classified missions and I hope some day the country will
honor each one of them. I love the book and hope to find good deals on
some of the books that followed vol 1. If anyone wants to sell an

hTis book really hit me right in the heart as it discusses
certain RT's and it's members. Also I'm a 'nam patch collector and loved
finding out where certain Recon Teams patches came from. Personally,
I'm 40 years old. Born in '74. The VIETNAM WAR has been a subject that
has always drawn my interest. The guys who wrote this book put a lot of
heart into it! I'm very glad I was able to add it to my SOG Library.
Long live the MEN who where there that made it back.

Jason Hardy's SOG Team History series is a MUST HAVE for
anyone seeking MACV-SOG History! GREAT books! Shipped fast, and once I
got it could not put it down. Highly recommended.

This is the first of a projected series of volumes covering
the history and insignia of the reconnaissance teams of MACVSOG, which
conducted highly classified operations in Laos and Cambodia during the
Vietnam Conflict. Their mission was to observe and interdict the
communist logistical apparatus within those nations that were
collectively known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Seven teams are covered in individual chapters - RTs Asp, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Indigo, Montana, and Rattler. The work is heavily illustrated, with each team's membership dileanated over time with photos (most in color). The second half of the work covers the insignia of the individual teams and their development over time. For those interested in military regalia, the patches and insignia of SOG are of unique interest, since the unit was never assigned an official crest due to its covert nature. This sanction, however, did not prevent the unit, its three command and control bases, and the individual teams from designing, procuring, and wearing unofficial patches.
This is a specialist work that caters to those who have an interest in MACVSOG, the history of covert operations, and the development of unit insignia. My only bones of contention are with the dearth of more information on team operations (which are rather truncated) and the price (steep due to the heavily illustrated nature of the work and its publication by individual means). For those whose interests coincide with the above, however, price is no problem, and any good publication which sheds more light on one of the most unique units in American military history is a welcome addition to a bookshelf.

My husband who served with Special Forces from 1970-1973, was
so excited to see the photos of David Davidson (known as Babysan) and
especially the photo of David receiving his famed Silver Pistol award!!!
My husband got in his car with the book and personally delivered the
book as a gift to David's brother (my husnand has been a lifelong friend
of the Davidson family and is from the same hometown). For history
buffs and since very little is really known about these top secret
warriors, David Davidson (Babysan) had a good natured rivalry with Mad
Dog Shriver. While David was last home on leave (he served 4 years in
Viet Nam) he achnowledged that Mad Dog Shriver had been credited for
having run the most missions over the line, but David with his customary
grin, would proudly and jokingly also let it be known, that it was he
who actually held the record for having "completed" the most missions
over the line.
